There are very few places you can go in and around Mountainair right now that don't lead to some sunflower somewhere! The community garden is FULL! And tomorrow at the Sunflower Festival in town they will be everywhere!
Turns out it comes from North America and was thought to be used by Native Americans in Arizona and New Mexico as far back as 3000 BC.
There was a detour into Russia which resulted in its commercial uses and those seeds found their way back to North America, again.
If you are not into coloring, photographing them is also a lot of fun. I can't seem to stop....

There are many, many good things about the sunflower. Not only are they really pretty... they are healthy as seeds and oils, have been used medicinally by many ancient and modern people, and inspire the bees and hummingbirds to stop by!
Don't forget about the festival tomorrow! I hope to see you there!
