Here in the center of New Mexico you can! And no, you don't need a space alien ship to transport you, all you need is a trip to the Abo Ruins which are part of the Salinas Mission Pueblo National Park Service just west of Mountainair, NM.
Here's a quick tour via video to see what is in store for you! Below it you will find the facts to make it happen!
The Park is open every day but major holidays, you can see the details here at the Salinas Park Website. Visiting the park is Free - yea! But there are a lot of cool things in the visitor center....
Summer hours are 9am - 6pm and Winter hours are 9am - 5pm. There are picnic tables available to eat at and bathrooms that are accessible to everyone, so you can take your time looking around!
There are National Park Service Park Rangers on site and they are the awesome tour guides for those who want to see the Petroglyphs up close! You just need to call ahead at: 505-847-2585 (the main office number) or 505-847-2400 to Abo directly. That is their main number which is located at the visitor center in Mountainair. Stopping their first will give you a great overview of what all three sites offer - and of course the town would love you to visit us also!
Each site has a learning packet for classrooms or kids in general - you can ask about it before you head out at the number above.
The main site is accessible to everyone, though it is gravel you will be on. Dogs are welcome on a leash and well behaved, no leg lifting on the monument or you know, other...
The Petroglyph Tour is by reservation only. You also need to be prepared to hike something short of a mile up and down hills and over loose rocks and gravel - though very little woods you will go through!
Pictures and Video are great, touching is not great - the oils from our hands destroys what is left!
But the one indisputable fact you can only really experience by being there your self is the beauty and wonder of their lives and the land they lived on.
I hope you will visit soon and enjoy it as much as me and Freedom did! Maybe I will even see you there - 'cause I know I'll be going back - one visit just wasn't enough!
